Ingredients

For the Spice Blend
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon ground ginger
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
For Each Cup
  • 1 cup freshly brewed coffee
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream or half-and-half
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar or maple syrup
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon prepared spice blend
  • whipped cream for topping (optional)
  • crushed walnuts for garnish (optional)

Method

  1. Combine all spices in a small bowl, whisking them together until evenly distributed. Store any leftover blend in a sealed jar.
  2. Prepare coffee using your preferred method, ensuring it's hot and robust. Medium to dark roast works best.
  3. In your serving mug, combine brown sugar, vanilla extract, and measured spice blend. Pour about two tablespoons of hot coffee into the mug and stir vigorously until sugar dissolves and spices are incorporated.
  4. Pour remaining hot coffee into the mug, stirring gently as you pour. Slowly add cream or half-and-half, watching it create swirls before incorporating fully.
  5. Give the coffee a final gentle stir. Taste and adjust sweetness or spice levels as desired. Top with whipped cream if desired and sprinkle with crushed walnuts for garnish.

Notes

Store leftover spice blend in an airtight container at room temperature for up to six months. Mix spice blend in larger batches for convenience. Don't add spices directly to hot coffee without dissolving them first. Fresh spices make a noticeable difference. Never boil cream or milk as it can curdle. Coffee is best enjoyed immediately while hot and fresh.
