Preparation Steps
- Preheat your oven to 375°F and lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add the ground beef. Break it apart with a wooden spoon, cooking until no pink remains, about 6-8 minutes. Drain excess fat, leaving about a tablespoon for moisture.
- Add diced onion to the beef and cook for 3-4 minutes until softened and fragrant. Stir in minced garlic and cook another 30 seconds until aromatic.
- Remove the skillet from heat and stir in the cheddar cheese soup, ketchup, mustard, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix thoroughly until the meat is well-coated. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Spread the beef mixture evenly in your prepared baking dish. Top with frozen tater tots in a single layer. Sprinkle both cheeses evenly over the tots.
- Bake uncovered for 25-30 minutes until the tots are golden brown and the cheese is bubbly around the edges.
Notes
Can be assembled up to 24 hours ahead and refrigerated - add 10 extra minutes to cooking time if baking from cold. Don't skip draining the ground beef to avoid sogginess. Avoid covering with foil as this steams rather than crisps the top. Store leftovers in refrigerator for up to 4 days or freeze for up to 3 months. Reheat in 350°F oven for best texture.
