Ingredients

  • 1 loaf French bread or Italian bread, sliced lengthwise
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cloves fresh garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional)

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Position the rack in the upper third of the oven for optimal browning.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine softened butter, minced garlic, parsley, oregano, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly until the garlic distributes evenly throughout the butter.
  3. Cut the bread loaf in half lengthwise, creating two long pieces. Spread the garlic butter mixture generously across both cut surfaces, ensuring coverage reaches the edges.
  4. Sprinkle Parmesan cheese evenly over the buttered surfaces if using.
  5. Place bread cut-side up on a baking sheet. Bake for 8-12 minutes until the edges turn golden brown and the butter bubbles actively.
  6. Remove from oven and let cool for 2-3 minutes. Cut into individual slices using a sharp knife. Serve immediately while the crust is crispy and the inside remains warm.

Notes

Use fresh garlic for best flavor. Prepare garlic butter mixture up to 24 hours in advance and refrigerate. Store leftover toast in refrigerator for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 1 month wrapped in foil. Reheat in 350°F oven for 5-7 minutes to restore crispiness. Ensure butter is properly softened, not melted, and avoid over-buttering. Use day-old bread for better texture.
